A renown composer and musical director on broadway, Adam Guettel comes from a family that is famous in the world of musical theater.
When he was still a toddler, he was taken to see the musicals written by his mother, Mary Rodgers, and his grandfather Richard Rodgers!
The grandson of musical theater legend Richard Rodgers, New York based composer Adam Guettel is a leading artist in the worlds of Broadway and film, and now emerges into opera. His upcoming project, Millions, will have its first production in the summer of 2016. An opera based on The H.G. Wells Invisible Man will be produced by the Houston Grand Opera. His musical, The Light In the Piazza (cast album on Nonesuch Records), with a book by Craig Lucas, premiered on Broadway at Lincoln Center Theater’s Vivian Beaumont Theater in April 2005 and went on to receive six 2005 Tony Awards including two for Mr. Guettel – Best Original Score, Best Orchestrations and a Grammy nomination for best cast recording. The Light In the Piazza also received five Drama Desk Awards, including two for Mr Guettel — Best Music, and Best Orchestrations. He wrote music and lyrics for Floyd Collins, which received the 1996 Lucille Lortel Award for Best Musical and earned Mr. Guettel the Obie Award for Best Music. Saturn Returns (recorded by Nonesuch as Myths and Hymns) was produced in an extended run at the Joseph Papp Public Theater in 1998. Accolades for Mr. Guettel include the Stephen Sondheim Award (1990), the ASCAP New Horizons Award (1997), and the American Composers Orchestra Award (2005). He received an honorary doctorate from Lehman College in 2007.

Adam Guettel Workshop of Masterclasses Session Schedule – Grand Canyon University
SESSION 1: Friday 3pm – 5:30pm, Perspectives on Contemporary Musical Theater. Mr. Guettel will discuss his unique perspective on musical theater works composed 1970 and later. Vocalists and collaborative pianists will present selections from Music Theater repertoire by the following composers: John Bucchino, Joe Iconis, Jeff Blumenkrantz, Paul Gordon, Jeanine Tesori, Josh Schmidt, Dave Malloy, Jennifer Giering and Adam Guettel.
SESSION 2: Friday 7pm – 9:30pm, Works of Adam Guettel. Vocalists and collaborative pianists will present repertoire selections composed by Adam Guettel. This is a rare opportunity for singers, to receive coaching and insight from the composer regarding text setting, interpretation and inspiration. Question and Answer with Mr. Guettel after the performance portion. Composers are invited to this session to participate in the dialogue. Gain a singular window into the creative process of this celebrated American composer.
SESSION 3: Saturday 10am – 12:30pm, Golden Age Musical Theater Interpretation. Vocalists and collaborative pianists will present selections of stage and film productions from the true Golden Age of Musical Theater (composed 1930-1959,) especially encouraged are works by Rodgers & Hammerstein, Rodgers & Hart, Lerner & Loewe, Cole Porter, The Gershwins, and Irving Berlin.
SESSION 4: Saturday 2pm – 4:30pm, Audition Techniques. Vocalists and collaborative pianists will present 32 bar cuts of their choice and receive constructive feedback through a mock audition. Mr. Guettel will discuss the proper selection of audition material and preparation of 16 and 32 bar cuts, and communication with an accompanist. This is a chance for singers to experience the other side of the table (learn how directors and music directors think.) Mr. Guettel asks that singers in this session bring a smartphone or other device with video capability to record the audition. (Tripod and smart phone adapter provided.)
